From the Author's Introduction:

"So much has been written about Human Resource Management over the past decade that we have reached information overload. The rate of new publications available over the Internet or in bookstores on leadership, people management, and employee motivation grows exponentially. Keeping up in the literature, even in a narrow area of expertise, is becoming impossible.

"More than ever, what is needed is an effort to synthesize what is being learned and promoted, and to make it available in a practical format to the management practitioner. Distilling fundamental principles of management from the universe of management philosophies, theories and experiences would give managers a base-line to assess new management ideas and a roadmap to guide their own day-to-day activities.

"This book is intended to be a simple reference guide, a quick read and not an academic, scholarly treatise. Initially it was just supposed to be a checklist, but admittedly, it grew a bit.

"Most Principles are accompanied by a few corollaries (logical extensions of the Principle) and a list of suggested practices for managers in order to bring each Principle to life.

"A few previously published articles follow each Principle, to embellish and reinforce the ideas. These articles were written over the past dozen or so years and were part of the evolution of the book's 15 Principles. And at the end is a suggested way you could follow-up from reading this book.

"I took thirty or more years to learn (or recognize) the importance of the 15 Principles in this book. Although so many of them now seem common sense in print, they were not always self-evident. I hope this publication will save you all the time I took and help kick start or enhance your career in managing people.
